Hundreds without power, officials working to open shelters

Kentucky Power and Kentucky Utilities are gradually restoring power to customers in Eastern Kentucky but hundreds are still without electricity.The current list of counties with outages includes Bell, Boyd, Carter, Harlan, Knott, Leslie, Letcher, Perry, Pike, Pulaski and Wise Counties.

We are following a developing story this morning out across the mountains.Kentucky Power and Kentucky Utilities are reporting hundreds of customers are without power. The current air temperature is between zero and 5 degrees. Leslie County officials tell WYMT they are working to open an emergency area for those affected by the outage. Right now, people who need shelter can go to the Leslie County 911 dispatch center. Fire officials with the Grapevine/Chavies Volunteer Fire Department in Perry County tell WYMT they are opening up their building as a warming station for anyone who needs it from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesday. There are outages being reported in Boyd, Floyd, Johnson, Letcher, Morgan, Perry and Pike County.
