Powell County Tourism Commission Achieves Net-Zero Energy at Newly Named Red River Gorge Visitor Center

Posted

Powell County, KY — September 10, 2025 — Local and state officials joined the Powell County Tourism Commission this afternoon to celebrate a major milestone in sustainability with the ribbon-cutting of the newly named Red River Gorge Visitor Center.

The event marked the Commission’s achievement as the first tourism commission in Kentucky to reach net-zero energy consumption. The milestone comes following the installation of a 22.5-kilowatt solar panel system and two Level 2 electric vehicle chargers, officially powering the visitor center entirely through renewable energy.

“This project is a big step forward,” said representatives of the Powell County Tourism Commission. “The solar panels are taking power directly from the sun, and we’re using that to operate the entire visitor center.”

The project was completed in partnership with the  Mountain Association, an eastern Kentucky nonprofit dedicated to supporting organizations with energy-saving strategies. By offsetting power use with on-site solar generation, the project is expected to save the Tourism Commission approximately $4,000 annually, freeing up funds for expanded programming and visitor services.

While cost savings are significant, Powell County Tourism officials emphasized that the initiative is about more than energy efficiency.

“We have a 29,000-acre canyon system here that we’re working hard to preserve, protect, and conserve,” the Commission stated. “Sustainability is at the heart of what we do, and this solar project is another way we’re investing in the future of the Gorge.”

By becoming the first tourism commission in Kentucky to achieve net-zero energy, Powell County hopes to inspire other local tourism organizations to explore renewable energy solutions.

“It’s easier than many people realize,” one official said. “When communities see it in action, they’re more likely to take action in their own lives, businesses, or organizations.”

The Powell County Tourism Commission encourages visitors and residents alike to explore the Red River Gorge, now with a stronger commitment to environmental stewardship.
