MT. STERLING, Ky. (KT) – Kentucky State Police (KSP) at the Morehead Post announced Sunday night they are continuing to investigate a weekend multi-vehicle collision in Montgomery County that injured four people, including the Montgomery County sheriff.

Morehead KSP Post 8 says they received a call from Central Dispatch in Montgomery County, regarding an injury collision on Interstate 64 (I-64) at exit 113.
According to the KSP, Montgomery County Sheriff David Charles had been requested by the Bath County Fire Department to assist them by shutting down I-64 at exit 113 to provide a detour while they cleared a previous crash scene at mile marker 118.

While Charles was still in his vehicle, a 2025 Dodge Ram Pickup with his emergency equipment activated. Michael Morris, 61 of Lawrenceburg KY, who was traveling East bound on I-64 in his KIA Telluride, struck the rear of the sheriff's truck.

Sheriff Charles was taken to St. Joe Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Michael Morris and his passengers Mary Morris and Kristie Godby also of Lawrenceburg KY, were also transported by ambulance to St. Joe Hospital for their injuries.

Michael Morris would later be airlifted to the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington, where he is listed in stable condition.  Sheriff Charles has since been treated and released from the hospital.

KSP was assisted on scene by Montgomery County Sheriff's Department, Mt. Sterling Fire Department and Mt. Sterling Police Department.

The collision remains under investigation and is being reconstructed by Trooper Jordan Barnett.
