Powell County school officials say an attendee displayed a firearm and made threats outside a recent middle school football game.
According to a letter from Superintendent Sarah Wasson, the incident happened on September 12 during a game between Powell County and Morgan County.
Wasson said the situation began when a Morgan County fan exchanged words with a volunteer who was helping move the sideline chains. After the game, the fan reportedly waited outside the gate and confronted a Powell County player before leaving the parking lot. At that point, Wasson wrote, the individual displayed a gun.
Morgan County Superintendent Ralph Hamilton alerted Wasson and the Powell County school police chief about the incident. In her letter to parents and community members, Wasson said Hamilton expressed support for the investigation and reaffirmed his district’s commitment to safe athletic environments.
“We also want to thank the Morgan County School District and superintendent for bringing this to our attention and his support to ensure our athletic programs are focused on students growing as athletes and are safe environments for players, fans and our communities,” Wasson wrote.
The Powell County Police Dept is investigating the incident with help from Stanton Police and other county officials. Wasson said charges are expected, though no further details were released.
